Once again, lots of wonderful details about a place I've never been aware of before. Certainly, in general terms, I've heard of the Battle of Vicksburg, but not Grand Gulf. Amazing it remains that the end for Vicksburg came on the same day as Gettysburg's great battle.
I've never heard a building described as "elderly" before.....it fits fine.
A beautiful and moving post, and also a sad one. For some reason, images came into my mind of Spectre, Alabama (from the movie Big Fish) while I was reading your description of Grand Gulf. If you don't know that movie, you should watch it sometime.
